Australian captain Aaron Finch retires ahead of T20 World Cup

Australia captain and veteran player Aaron Finch has surprised everyone by announcing his retirement from ODI cricket ahead of the T20 World Cup. Australian captain Aaron Finch will play his last ODI against New Zealand on Sunday. Finch will retire from One Day International cricket after this match. Finch, who has represented Australia in 145 ODIs, scored only 26 runs in his last seven innings in 50-over cricket this year.

Finch tweeted

"It's been a wonderful journey with some incredible memories," Finch said in an official statement. “I have been extremely fortunate to be a part of some wonderful ODI teams. Equally, I have been blessed by everyone I have played with. Now is the time to give a new captain the best chance to prepare for the next World Cup and win. I thank all those who have helped and supported me in my journey to this point.”

Finch's ODI career

Finch will not be a part of Australia's ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2024 squad, although he will continue to captain the team in this year's T20 World Cup. Finch has scored 5,401 runs in 145 ODIs with 17 centuries and 30 half-centuries. He made his debut against Sri Lanka at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in 2013 and scored his maiden century, scoring 148 against Scotland.

Was made captain of Australia in 2018

In 2018, Finch was appointed permanently the captain of the Australian white ball team after Steve Smith was banned for ball tampering. Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said, "On behalf of Australian cricket, I would like to congratulate Aaron for his immense contribution as captain of the Australian men's ODI team and as an amazing exponent of the 50-over format. "

He said, “Aaron is a very talented and determined player whose outstanding work with the bat is matched by his strong and inspiring leadership. I am delighted that Aaron will lead the Australian team in the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup where his leadership, experience and strategy will prove critical to our T20 World Cup title defense on home soil."
