CWG 2022: Bronze medalist Saurabh Ghoshal has also been making the country proud in the past, such is the story of his struggle


35-year-old Saurabh Ghoshal, who won a bronze medal in the squash singles event for the first time in the history of the Commonwealth Games, continues to write new records of success at the national level. Ghosal, who hails from Kolkata, won the bronze medal by defeating the 2018 champion. With this, he has become the first player in the country to win a medal in the squash singles event. There is a wave of happiness in the city about his victory. Saurabh, who completed his schooling at the city's famous Laxmipat Singhania School, is also called the squash superstar of India.

After Ghoshal's stellar performance in the Commonwealth Games, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also wished him, tweeting, "Another proud moment for West Bengal. Saurabh Ghoshal of Bengal has won the bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022. Hearty congratulations to them. His success will inspire countless people in the country. Best wishes for his future."

Ghoshal, who made the country proud in the Commonwealth Games, had made great sacrifices for this success. He stayed away from his family to focus on his training and practice. When he won the bronze medal and defeated the champion of 2018, Then his happiness, tears, and enthusiasm were visible inside the court. After the victory, the way he became emotional after hugging his wife sitting in the stands, it was not difficult to imagine how much Saurabh had sacrificed to achieve the goal, of staying away from the family.

His picture has been put up in the school in Kolkata where he studied so that the children studying there can be inspired by him. However, after completing his schooling at Lakshmipat Singhania School, he moved to Chennai, where he joined the ICL Squash Academy. His training was completed by retired Major Maniam and Cyrus Pocha. Prior to this, Saurabh had become famous all over the country after defeating Gaurav Nandrajog in the National Championship in New Delhi in 2006.

His world ranking as of May 2010 was 27. He won a bronze medal at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha. In August 2007, the President of India honored him with the Arjuna Award. In this way, he also became the first squash player in the country to receive this award. He started playing squash at the Racket Club in his home region Kolkata and his training was started by Major Maniam and Cyrus. Saurabh also won a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games 2018, while he has won five bronze, one gold, and one silver medal in the Asian Games.
